One large international study found that problematic pornography use affects up to 16.6% of people worldwide, with men more likely than women to report issues. The study also highlighted that PPU is as prevalent as other well-known mental health issues, such as depression, suggesting the need for better awareness and treatment options.

Several key predictors of PPU have been identified through research.
