A cruel and unusual event took place this Thursday during Caleb Flynn’s murder trial.
The 40-year-old former “American Idol” contestant — who’s been accused of shooting his wife Ashley Flynn in their Ohio home — apparently wrote two love songs for the young woman he was having an affair with before his wife’s death, and then produced them with AI.
Prosecutors, feeling no mercy, had the court listen to both of these cringey ballads — complete with cliche soft piano riffs, soaring anthemic choruses, and awful teenage diary lyrics — in what is perhaps the most mortifying punishment that can be inflicted on another human being.
Footage shows onlookers — including the victim’s loved ones — struggle to keep their composure, while a stone-faced Flynn, whose withered countenance grew more skull-like with each passing verse, occasionally betrayed his inner embarrassment by stroking his wrinkled forehead.
“If somewhere you feel this / if somewhere you’re whole / know that you still own every piece of my soul,” wailed the plaintive AI voice.
At one point, Flynn’s lyrics addressed the huge age gap with his mistress, Alleigha Botner, who was just 21 years old when they first met in 2022.
“They whispered about numbers / the years in between. Said love has a limit / said love’s not that clean,” the AI voice sang. “But age never mattered / when it was you and me. We were proof that forever / was something you feel not see.”
The AI-generated tracks were played at the trial hearing after prosecutors produced texts that they argue show how Flynn expressed a clear desire to kill his wife.
Alleigha, his mistress, sobbed as she read an exchange between them.
“I want to kill her, Caleb,” her own text read. “So bad.”
“That makes two of us,” Caleb’s response read.
In another text, Flynn confided, per CNN: “I was up until 4 am last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail.”
After shooting his wife twice in the back of the head, prosecutors say, Flynn, a father of two, staged the murder scene to make it look like a deadly robbery.
